(Attention! Please use the OpenVPN client linked here. There is also a commercial version of the client which does not work with our server. Other universities partly use the commercial server).

If OpenVPN reports that no connection to the gateway could be established, please check your network settings and make sure that no local firewall blocks the connection to the gateway.

If error messages indicate that the network configuration cannot be changed, make sure that the local user is a member of the OpenVPN Administrators group.

Errors could look like this:

Leave all settings as they are during the installation. You can of course adjust the path as you wish. After a while, the following window may appear in which you must press "Install".

After that, everything should go through to the end.

Set up the VPN

Generate your own certificate using the web interface CertMK and download the openvpn configuration file generated for you. Download it into any directory (e.g. "Downloads). Since the certificate has an expireation time it ist wise to label the file with the semester it was created. For example vpnFB02_<current_semester>.ovpn. However, you can choose any filename you like. Be careful not to accidentally create a file with the name vpnFB02.ovpn.txt

After starting the OpenVPN programme, a tray symbol (small screen) appears by default in the bottom right corner. Right-click on it and select the option Import from OVPN file. Then select the openvpn configuration file.

Dial into the VPN

By default, a tray symbol appears in the bottom right corner. Right-click on it and click on "Connect", then you will be asked for the password that was entered when the certificate was created. After a few seconds, the windows should disappear or you should receive a message that the connection is established. If not, error messages will appear.
